Ellen Johnson Sirleaf

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf the presidential candidate led the party in the 1997 Liberia general elections where she came in second in a field of thirteen. Prior to that, she served for five years as Assistant Administrator and Director of the Regional Bureau for Africa of the United Nations Development Programme with the rank of Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations.

Ms. Johnson Sirleaf is currently a member of the Advisory Board of the Modern Africa Growth and Investment Company, (MAGIC) and Senior Advisor to the Modern Africa Fund Managers (MAFM) which has prime offices in Washington DC, USA and Johannesburg, South Africa.

In a professional life that has spanned over thirty years, Ms. Johnson Sirleaf has been the Minister of Finance of Liberia; President of the Liberia Bank for Development and Investment; Vice President of Citicorp, Vice President of Hong Kong Equator Bank and a Senior Loan Officer of the World Bank.

She currently serves on several advisory boards in her home country and abroad, consults regularly for the UN Economic Commission for Africa as an External Advisor and is widely sought for speaking engagements.

Mrs. Johnson Sirleaf is the recipient of several special honors including the Commander de l’Ordre du Mono of Togo (1996), the Ralph Bunche International Leadership Award of the United States (1995), the Franklin D. Roosevelt Freedom of Speech Award of the United States (1988) and the Grand Commander Star of Africa Redemption of Liberia (1980). She was one of seven international eminent persons designated by the Organization of African Unity in 1999 to investigate the Rwanda genocide and one of the five Commission Chairs for the Inter-Congolese Dialogue. She also serves as Chairperson of the Open Society Institute West Africa, (OSIWA), and a member of the Soros Foundation Network.

Ms. Johnson Sirleaf holds a Master in Public Administration from Harvard University. She has four sons.
