A BRIEF POSITION STATEMENT What We Believe In We believe that the challenge of Liberia, a nation ravaged by civil conflicts; must be dictated by a clear understanding of the challenges we face and systematic approach to finding the requisite solutions. We believe that the Liberian people must be fully involved in the search for those solutions. While the majority of these people may appear uneducated by Western Standards and therefore may not be able to articulate their aspirations clearly in the English language, they have the inborn pride and a genuine desire for self-improvement and self-fulfillment. It is therefore the duty of a good government, we believe, to help our people develop these potentials so as to harness such hidden talents for national reconstruction. It is therefore the duty of a good government, we believe, to help our people develop these potentials so as to harness such hidden talents for national reconstruction. We believe that the basis of national reconstruction and reconciliation must form the bedrock of nation-building in the new Liberia. WHAT WE STAND FOR WE STAND FOR a new Liberia in which every effort is made to strengthen the weak, without weakening the strong, a new Liberia in which wage earner is lifted up, without bringing down the wage player; a new Liberia in which the rich have a patriotic obligation to help the poor; for we believe that the poor can be helped without destroying the rich. WE STAND FOR a new Liberia in which public spending is not allowed unreasonably to exceed revenues; a new Liberia in which those who are entrusted with public funds are held fully accountable to the public without fear or favor. WE STAND FOR a new Liberia in which the unity of our people and the brotherhood of man are actively fostered, while class hatred, ethnic antagonism and other national divisive tendencies are vigorously discouraged. WE STAND FOR a new Liberia in which the individual is not humiliated, and his dignity and pride are not abused. WE STAND FOR a new Liberia in which all persons are held equal before the law; a new Liberia in which the law itself is not twisted to favor or disfavor anyone on account of his/her political, social, economic, religious, cultural beliefs and affiliations. WE STAND FOR a new Liberia in which everyone enjoys the full right to self-expression and association, within the limits of the law; without open or clandestine victimization from any source. WE STAND FOR a new Liberia in which all those who give their honest labor for the welfare of the state are justly and timely rewarded for such labor. WE STAND FOR a new Liberia in which the people’s taxes are not used to blackmail them into blind loyalty to anyone in authority. WE STAND FOR a new Liberia in which professionals and technicians in the public sector do not live in fear of losing their jobs or falling out of favor with the powers that be for giving professional advice that may not be politically expedient. WE STAND FOR a new Liberia in which academic freedom is respected and our intellectuals are actively encouraged to develop, through research, the pool of knowledge required for enlightened nation-building. WE STAND FOR a new Liberia in which people are highly sensitized to the need for conservation; a new Liberia in which preservation is encouraged and destruction discouraged. WE STAND FOR a new Liberia in which communities must have a full say in the programs which are intended to affect their lives; a new Liberia in which they are given a full part to play in the implementation of those programs. WE STAND FOR a new Liberia in which recognition of distinguished services rendered to the state are shared by all those who deserve it. WE STAND FOR a new Liberia in which those who have served the country meritoriously for a good number of years, are treated with respect, honor and gratitude which they deserve, rather than with contempt callousness. WE STAND FOR a new Liberia in which the women of our nation, at all levels, are actively involved with the men, shoulder-to-shoulder in the many challenges of national reconstruction. WE STAND FOR a new Liberia in which wasteful consumption is replaced by thrift; a new Liberia in which Liberians working in cooperative groups at all levels are encouraged to evolve the Liberian merchant class that is imperative for the future of our commerce. WE STAND FOR a new Liberia in which self-reliance is encouraged. WE STAND FOR a strong and vibrant economy in which substantial businesses will be owned and operated by Liberians to insure the rapid diffusion of economic wealth and benefits to our people. Our performance as a nation has been seriously undermined by the recent and ongoing civil conflicts, a situation which has aggravated a perennial lack of foresight, insight and hindsight in the nation’s policy formulation, legislation, planning and administration. In this connection, it is useful to add that we should not try to accomplish the task of national reconstruction in the new Liberia by trials and errors method again adopting processes and ideas of little or no relevance to the solution of our problems. We must have a clear perspective of what the task of national reconstruction and reconciliation entails. We must make sure about where action is needed; and what attendant implications may be. We must make sure that every policy has a clear definition of the results it is expected to produce. Those results are then carefully examined against expectations. This is the way UP, we believe! This is the direction in which we wish to see Liberia go. As a party, we are fully prepared to guide the nation in this direction. That is why our party is called UP – Unity Party. And that is why we invite you to join us this upward bound train. WHAT IS AT STAKE is not VOTES, which an unscrupulous party can get by any number of unscrupulous ways. What is at stake is the very DESTINY of our nation. Certainly, your vote is important; by even more vital to us is your commitment to evolving a greater future for Liberia.
